Ken Rogoff, the Nobel prize, political biases, and elections

To contact us Click HERE
Ken Rogoff is a nice guy and very bright guy.  Someone who I got to know some when we were both at Hoover at the same time.  There is a drumbeat to give Ken Rogoff the Nobel prize.  If he gets it, like Krugman 08, Nobel committee will again interfering in US election.  The media will use this to conclude that Obama is not responsible for the poor economy.

But on the issue of financial crises I think that he is wrong.  There are multiple papers and books that take issue with Rogoff's claim that economic recoveries after recessions are particularly weak.  Regarding time series data for the US, Gerald P. Dwyer and James R. Lothian have a piece available here and Michael D. Bordo and Joseph G. Haubrich have something available here.  Regarding some slightly earlier published cross-country international evidence you can see a popular discussion available here, but the graphs and more detailed discussion are in my book with Grover Norquist available here.

You can see the argument in today's New York Times when Paul Krugman writes:
About that misplaced optimism: In a now-notorious January 2009 forecast, economists working for the incoming administration predicted that by now most of the effects of the 2008 financial crisis would be behind us, and the unemployment rate would be below 6 percent. Obviously, that didn’t happen.
Why did the administration get it wrong? It wasn’t exaggerated faith in the power of its stimulus plan; the report predicted a fairly rapid recovery even without stimulus. Instead, President Obama’s people failed to appreciate something that is now common wisdom among economic analysts: severe financial crises inflict sustained economic damage, and it takes a long time to recover. . . .

Well it's been a little over two weeks since my surgery (see previous post), and though I'm not quite back to my old self yet, I feel good enough to resume my duties at Colorado Springs Daily Photo :^) I thought I'd kick it off with a photo I took the day before my surgery. This is Saint Mary's Cathedral in downtown Colorado Springs, captured in that gorgeous late afternoon light that I love so much.

It's good to be back!

Good news and bad for the Pioneers Museum

To contact us Click HERE

In the last couple of weeks, scaffolding has crept up the facade of our beloved Pioneers Museum. Yes, it's finally getting some long-needed restoration work! Unfortunately the museum has been in the news lately for a less positive reason: it was broken into and vandalized last week. Some person or persons broke in and destroyed antique furnishings and cabinetry, and worse yet they smashed several historic windows, part of the building's original 1903 architecture. Unfortunately the glass cannot be replaced with any kind of reproduction and the furniture is probably beyond repair, which means we've lost a part of Colorado Springs history with this senseless act. So while the outside of the building is getting a facelift, the inside is a little worse for wear right now.

P.S.  While the sky isn't the subject of this photograph, it does look awfully nice, doesn't it? I guess this means I can call it a Skywatch Friday photo.  To see more Skywatch Friday images from bloggers all over the world, click HERE.

Facebook Says 'Yes' to Homeschoolers
Thursday, June 19, 2008
The world would go on just fine if this announcement had never been made, but for 1000's of homeschool kids it has now become easier to join the popular social networking site, Facebook, without compromising the verification process or site security. From the Facebook Blog,

Back in September 2006, we decided to open up Facebook to everyone. Well, almost everyone. We realized Facebook would be most useful if more people were allowed
to join, but we also weren't willing to compromise the security of the site by removing all methods of verification, especially for high school students and minors. Unfortunately this meant that most homeschoolers weren't able to register. For security purposes, users under the age of 18 were required to affiliate with their current high school, but it was nearly impossible to extend this system to homeschooled users.

We've been working on ways to solve this—we want minors to use Facebook safely above all. Today, we're happy to announce that we've recently come up with a way for homeschoolers to join. We've created a new verification system—one that doesn't depend on being in a high school, but still provides the level of security we believe is required. So welcome, everyone, to Facebook.

Romney's 52-point win is the largest Presidential Debate win that Gallup has ever measured

To contact us Click HERE
Do debates matter?  According to Gallup, Romney has seen a 5 percentage point bump since the debate last week.  On the other hand, there are political scientists who believe that the only thing (or almost the only thing that matters) is the economy.  Kevin Hassett and I have an article on the real impact that media bias has on people's perceptions (see also here).  I don't find it any less plausible that campaigns can shape the information that people receive and that impacts their views.  The alternative is to believe that virtually all campaign spending is a waste of money.  That candidates are irrationally wasting their time campaigning.

Well, we surely we will have to wait until all 4 debates are finished, but Gallup has an eight paragraph discussion on the size of Romney's debate win and its implications.  (Gallup's misleading discussion on the unemployment numbers on Friday is disappointing.)

My own guess is that Obama did so poorly because Romney did so well.  That Romney came across so strongly unnerved Obama and made him realize that the attacks that he was planning weren't going to work well.  Given that, Obama was at a loss about what to say.  In response, Biden is taking an incredible 6 days off the campaign trail to prepare for his debate with Ryan.  It is incredible when you think that he had only a week between the two debates.

LIFEs Tapestry of Homeschool Survey Running through Summer
http://learningisforev.HomeschoolTapestry.sgizmo.com
Over 700 homeschoolers have participated so far, adding their threads
to the Tapestry of Homeschooling survey in an effort to counteract
modern day mythologies of homeschooling.

Homeschoolers comprise a diverse and multifaceted community. Getting
a better picture of who we are can help us support one another
better, as well as better protect our collective right to direct our
children's learning.

Results of this survey will be publicly available, but no personal
information will be collected, nor will any information be sold or
used for commercial purposes by Learning is for Everyone, Inc.

Hard (paper) copies of the survey are available on request for
distribution at a local level by local and state homeschool groups.
You may return the surveys to us (email info@learningis4eve ryone.org
for address) for inclusion in final results, or use them to get a
better understanding of homeschooling in your area.

The survey is long -- there are 80 questions -- but many are optional
fill-ins. And we're asking questions others looking at homeschooling
haven't been asking, about things we think will provide a far more
accurate look at who we are and what's important to us. It'll remain
online through the summer.

I hope you'll add your threads to the Tapestry of Homeschool, and
encourage others to, as well. The more threads, the more beautiful
the Tapestry!

News: It Appears Reform Is Coming to the For-Profit Education Industry

To contact us Click HERE

Reported by: Peter Cohan for dailyfinance.com

A Senate committee will hold hearings on June 24 about the $20 billion in federal student loans that end up going to the for-profit education business. This industry induces many people to take out student loans they won't be able to repay: The students are stuck with the debt, but the money goes directly to the schools, which have been growing in profitably. The industry's revenues are up 26.4% a year, with an average return on equity of 33.5% during the last five years.

The exploitation of people who can't repay the loans is endemic. At the University of Phoenix -- with an enrollment of 400,000, it's the nation's largest for-profit university -- only 18% of students get their degrees in six years. The number drops to 6% at some campuses, and among online students, falls even further to a scant 4%. The many dropouts default on loans "as big as $100,000 for incomplete bachelor's degrees and up to $200,000 for advanced degrees," according to Business Insider.

How Strong is the For-Profit Education Lobby in Washington?

The Department of Education wants to change the regulations governing the for-profit education industry in ways that would seriously crimp that growth and profitability. According to Bloomberg News, those new regulations could be out for comment as soon as next week. Bloomberg reports that these regulations "would cut federal aid to for-profit colleges whose graduates' starting salaries make it difficult to repay their loans as well as tighten rules against tying recruiters' pay to the number of students they enroll."

Meanwhile, on Capitol Hiil, Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) will convene hearings on the subject before the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee that he chairs. "We need to ensure for-profit colleges are working well to meet the needs of students and not just shareholders," Harkin's statement said. "We owe it to students and taxpayers to make sure these dollars are being well-spent."

The for-profit education industry has worked with government officials to gain access to new markets. Bloomberg News reported on Apollo Group (APOL) and its efforts to use campaign contributions to influence New York state to let it open a campus there. Interestingly, that case reveals that the for-profit industry does not always succeed.

It's likely that by July, the nation will have a clearer picture of how Washington plans to change the rules governing for-profit education to a smaller, more slowly-growing business -- one that isn't permitted to thrive by taking on students who have no hope either of graduating or of repaying their student loans.

Judging from their website, the menu looks yummy, healthy and very reasonably priced. I've got to try this place out!

The Denver Modernism Show is this weekend! My brother Chuck and I went last night and it was great. We got there a little late for the Miss Modernism Pageant (darn it!) but I did get to meet the newly crowned Miss Modernism, Michelle Baldwin, shortly afterward. My friend Jaime, who was Miss Modernism 2010-11, was there and she looked fabulous! In fact, lots of people turned up wearing their fun mod styles (I also gave it my best, but no one took my picture -- boo hoo!). It really is a great event for people watching. It's also great for shopping, and I did plenty of that too. There are over a hundred exhibitors showing everything midcentury, from furniture to cars to jewelry to art to toys to clothing... I even saw a tiki aquarium, and ooooooh I was sorely tempted! If you're into Midcentury Modern the way I'm into Midcentury Modern, you've got to make it to the show sometime this weekend.

Congrats to the new Miss Modernism, Michelle Baldwin!

This lithograph is by one of my favorite artists, Shag (Josh Agle).  I would dearly love to have it (maybe because the girl in it looks a little like me) but it was out of my budget.  Shag was actually there and I got a chance to chat with him for a few minutes. He's a nice guy.  I also met him a few years ago at a gallery opening of one of his shows in Denver, but I don't think he remembers me ;^)  LOL

Ah, the joys of early '70s decor.  Need I say more?

I sincerely hope these mod apple green chairs find an appreciative home this weekend -- they're awesome!

I thought this couple was so cool and so adorable, I begged them to let me take their picture!

Twilight rainbow

On Monday night as I was driving to my book club get together, I could see the tail end of a vibrant rainbow in the failing light. My friend Connie hosted book club this month, and she lives in the neighborhood that was ravaged by the Waldo Canyon fire. All around her house, the trees, hillside and many other homes are reduced to skeletal ashes. It is breathtaking (in a bad way) to drive through there, and Monday was no different. But I managed to capture the rainbow at the end of her cul de sac just before it disappeared, and in a way it was hopeful.

Mammatus clouds over Colorado Springs

To contact us Click HERE

On Tuesday afternoon I was taking a little break from my studio to get a quick bite to eat, and as I was driving I noticed these striking mammatus clouds forming to the east. I've never in my life seen mammatocumulus. It's quite a rare phenomenon. Luckily I had a camera with me and got a good shot of the dramatic sky. Very cool!

A small aircraft passed overhead while I was in the middle of a shoot for one of my corporate clients last Tuesday evening. I had to take a picture of it, of course ;^)

This is my first time participating in Skywatch Friday, and I can't promise that I will do it again, but I'll try and remember to! (This photo was just so perfect, and today just happens to be Friday, so...) To see more Skywatch Friday pictures, click HERE.

The Leechpit

Located on Nevada and Dale (in the old service station formally occupied by Toons), the Leechpit is where you go to buy records, skateboards,  vintage duds, and all the other paraphernalia craved by hipsters and their ilk. Since I'm a huge fan of vintage anything, I admit to having spent a few bucks there from time to time. I took this picture while on a senior portrait shoot a couple of weekends ago. It's a photogenic place.

October Theme Day: Silhouettes

By George, it's already October, people! The first of the month means it's Theme Day for City Daily Photo bloggers. This month's theme is silhouette. I decided that the group of statues that grace the entrance of the Olympic Training Center would be excellent subjects, so Pat and I went down there on Saturday evening to grab a few shots.

This sculpture is called Olympic Strength.   A detail (in silhouette, of course!).  This photo shows what Olympic Strength looks like with front lighting instead of back. It's really an impressive piece. And it's HUGE.

I actually took this photo while leaving my studio last Saturday. The clouds looked so interesting and dramatic, I dug my camera out, trotted across the street and took a picture, even though I really just wanted to go home -- but I couldn't resist! They say every cloud has a silver lining.  Well here's your proof!  Colorado has the most beautiful skies.

10 statements that Obama should be embarrassed for making

To contact us Click HERE
I would have picked different quotes than Politico did here, such as Obama's constant 2008 promise to cut "net government spending," but here is their list:
-- “Washington is broken. My whole campaign has been premised from the start on the idea that we have to fundamentally change how Washington works.”
-- “I think that I’m a better speechwriter than my speechwriters. I know more about policies on any particular issue than my policy directors. And I’ll tell you right now that I’m gonna think I’m a better political director than my political director.”
-- “If I don’t have this done in three years, then there’s going to be a one-term proposition.”
-- “Ronald Reagan changed the trajectory of America in a way that Richard Nixon did not, and a way that Bill Clinton did not.”
-- “Guantanamo will be closed no later than one year from now.”
-- “I think that health care, over time, is going to become more popular.”
-- “It’s here that companies like Solyndra are leading the way toward a brighter and more prosperous future.”
-- “I fought with you in the Senate for comprehensive immigration reform. And I will make it a top priority in my first year as President.”
-- “What we have done is kicked this can down the road. We are now at the end of the road and are not in a position to kick it any further. We have to signal seriousness in this by making sure some of the hard decisions are made under my watch, not someone else’s.”

CNNMoney survey of economists has them picking Romney by 3-to-1 margin

To contact us Click HERE
This CNN survey is such a small survey so I am not even sure why this story was even written up, but it is interesting at least for the way that it is carried.
A recent CNNMoney story reported that the Republican presidential nominee, despite trailing in a number of swing state polls, is the overwhelming choice among economists surveyed. They picked him, according to CNNMoney, by a 3-to-1 margin. However, CNNMoney made sure to stress in the headline that they did so "reluctantly." . . . .

Biden says that middle class has been "buried" during the last four years

To contact us Click HERE
From The Hill Newspaper:
. . .  “How they can justify, how they can justify raising taxes on the middle class that has been buried the last four years — how in Lord's name can they justify raising their taxes with these tax cuts,” [Vice President Biden said.]
Republicans quickly seized on the remarks, accusing the Obama administration of implementing policies that have hurt the middle class.
“Vice President Biden made a stunning admission today and we couldn’t agree more: the middle class has been ‘buried’ under the last four years of this President’s policies," said Romney campaign spokeswoman Amanda Henneberg. "Under President Obama, the middle class has suffered from crushing unemployment, rising prices and falling incomes. They can’t afford to be ‘buried’ for four more years."
“We agree, the middle class has been buried the past four years by Obama's failed policies from higher taxes to more debt, which is why he doesn't deserve another term in the White House to make it worse,” said Kirsten Kukowski, spokeswoman for the Republican National Committee. . . .

National Journal Poll shows race tied despite assuming that there are 7 percentage points more Democrats who are going to vote

To contact us Click HERE
I have previously written here about the problems with the presidential election polling.  Does anyone really believe that the Democratic turnout will be similar to what it was relative to Republicans in 2008?  Apparently a lot of the pollsters do.  I don't so that makes me think that Romney is actually ahead right now in this poll.
Obama and Romney each pulled in 47 percent support in the poll among likely voters. It is among the narrowest margins of several presidential surveys published ahead of the debate this week. Other polls have shown the president with a slim lead. In this survey, while the race is tied among likely voters, Obama has a 5-point lead, 49 percent to 44 percent, among registered voters. . . .
Romney led in the poll among independents, 49 percent to 41 percent, with both candidates winning more than 90 percent support from their respective parties. The survey had Obama winning 81 percent of the nonwhite vote and Romney carrying 55 percent of white voters.
In estimating the turnout on Nov. 6, the poll projects an electorate that is 74 percent white, 11 percent African-American, and 8 percent Latino. The likely-voter party splits are 36 percent Democratic, 29 percent Republican, and 30 percent independent
The estimates are similar to the 2008 turnout, when, according to CNN exit polling, 74 percent of voters were white, 13 percent black, and 9 percent Latino, with Democratic turnout at 39 percent, Republicans at 32 percent, and independents at 29 percent. . . . .

Newest Fox News piece: Four ways Romney must hold Obama accountable for the economy

To contact us Click HERE
My newest Fox News piece starts this way:
Are you better off today than four years ago? Tonight's presidential debate, with its focus on domestic policy, is Mitt Romney’s chance to put President Obama on the defensive, to make him answer for his abysmal economy policies.
Without a doubt, the economic performance during Obama’s presidency has been sluggish and GDP growth has been getting even slower. The new jobs added to the economy have merely offset the jobs that have been lost, with no increase in total employment. Obama has overseen the weakest economic recovery ever.
But the media has largely glossed over the continued slump and painted an unjustifiably rosy picture of the economy. It’s Romney’s job tonight to focus on the important economic issues.
Obama’s strategy is clear: blame Bush and claim the economic problems he inherited were much worse than anyone could have known at the time. But such a line of arguing should be a hard sell if Romney plays his cards right in tonight’s debate. Romney only needs to remind us of Obama’s continuing overly optimistic predictions. . . . .
