I live in a metropolitan area now. However, for most of my life, I have owned homes in (what many would call) the "back of beyond" -- including 30+ years in the mountains of Montana, Oregon and Washington. I do not want my assessments to be used to pay for security guards and I would not want them used that way even if I lived there. Please stop preaching to others as though you know everything and they know nothing. It's arrogant and offensive.

We have a full time, paid manager now -- who sits in a paid-for administration building all day with an electric gate controlling the main access. If you hear or see something suspicious or illegal, you need to call the sheriff, game warden or the manager. If the sheriff won't do his duty, then that is a completely different issue. FP has a terrible reputation in all three nearby counties. I've heard it and seen it first-hand from locals in LaVeta to San Luis to Alamosa. And, in my opinion, it has been earned. Perhaps if the FP residents were more cooperative and less nasty/demanding/condescending, local law enforcement would address problems in a more responsive way. Corrections in behavior and attitude should begin in Forbes Park so that "we" can begin to earn their concern and respect.

If you really believe that MOST landowners would want to pay for armed, security guards, then you should send that in as a survey question and let's see what response we receive. If MOST of them will support it with increases in assessments, then we should pay for it. But I won't make any effort until we have facts and quantitative data to commit to and implement on-going, annual, private patrols.

Finally, I also believe we need to find out from our insurance carrier and our attorney what, if any, additional liability exposure we have as an association when we hire private, armed guards. Complete and accurate information should be included with any survey so that the actual expense related to private patrols is known BEFORE we ask land owners to pay for it.
