What Do You See? -- Submitted by: Patricia M.

Most of you have probably seen the movie, “The Great Outdoors”.  It’s your basic summer- vacation-gone-wrong movie set in the woods of Wisconsin.  In the film, pompous brother-in-law Roman and his weird family show up uninvited and impose themselves on our long-suffering hero, Chet.
Chet and his family are vacationing at a cabin in the woods where their intent was to spend the week fishing, hiking and otherwise enjoying nature.  Although the movie touches on a lot of themes, one in particular is pertinent to our Forbes Park community.  In that scene, Chet and Roman are sitting on a deck overlooking a pristine lake.  Roman, always thinking in terms of ways to fill his bank account, looks across the lake at the far shoreline lined with conifers.  He tells Chet that the lake is an undeveloped resource and describes to Chet what could be there:  condos, shopping malls, golf courses.  Chet looks out at the same view and says something to the effect of, “All I see is a bunch of trees.”  My first impression of Forbes Park was that it was a beautiful, unspoiled, secluded community with few buildings or other signs of “civilization”.  As I toured the property with a local realtor, I was told that the community was covenant controlled (which I viewed as a good thing), that mobile homes were outlawed and that camping was allowed, but only on a limited basis.  I liked what I saw, was in agreement with the covenants and bought property.I assumed most landowners bought property in Forbes Park because they shared similar sentiments.  However, judging by comments made by others, I am led to believe that some landowners see Forbes Park not as a peaceful mountain retreat, but as an undeveloped resource.  Among other things (this list is not inclusive), people have suggested that we need:  (1) a building large enough to hold weddings; (2) ATV trails; (3) a pool hall; (4) an indoor swimming pool; (5) tennis courts (which I would point out, Forbes Park had at one time, but few used); (6) a golf course; (7) a convenience store; (8) a gas station, and (9) a washateria.  One land owner went so far as to say that he envisioned Forbes Park as someday becoming a “town”.  In my view, Forbes Park is just fine as it is and I hope it remains largely unchanged.  It may be “just a bunch of trees,” but that’s what makes it the rare jewel that it is.  Adding a bunch of amenities, turning Forbes Park into another town will ruin its character and indeed negate its appeal for many of us.So, my question to you is, “When you look at Forbes Park…what do you see?
